Back pain is something that most people suffer to varying degrees in their lives. As reflexologists, we are frequently presented with this condition. Although reflexology has a good track record in providing relief, there are those cases that either respond to a degree or not at all.
There are many causes of back pain, and it is these which we need to be aware of. There are structural, primary and secondary causes — it is not only a case of working on the spinal reflexes. In fact, this can have little influence on a successful treatment outcome (unless there was a direct trauma to an area of the spine).
Consideration needs to be given to other causes. These can include those of an organic nature, such as the kidneys or the digestive system. The body functions as one integrated unit — a problem in one area can cause a disturbance elsewhere. As the seminar's title indicates, it will go beyond the symptomatic manifestations of general back pain and include areas such as the shoulders and neck. Also, those of a gynaecological nature, including prostate problems in the male, will be included. Various hormonal conditions can also be a factor to consider.
The beauty of reflexology is that disturbances to the body's holistic functioning are displayed through the reflexes — waiting to be found with our fingers. The work of the reflexologist is to be able to detect these disturbances and to treat them accordingly.
Techniques to the cervical spine will be demonstrated. I look forward to meeting you at the seminar.
Best Wishes
Tony
