TONY PORTER FOCUSED REFLEXOLOGY®

Since demonstrating what I call the trio application of the neck, abdomen and the feet at my seminars, it has created a lot of interest and requests for further information.
To fully explain would take many chapters, however I will endeavour to keep things as simple as possible and I hope understandable.
I have had a lifetime of clinical experience not just of reflexology, but also other forms of bodywork.
I have always placed great importance on abdominal massage. It is here that most of the physiological process takes place. As an example, research is showing that diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s have their origins in the gut. (1)

Another example concerns endocrine function. Before hormones can be used by the body they have to go through a conversion process, much of which takes place in the gut.

The gut is also the main centre of immunity. It has its own intelligence-its own brain which is made up of 100 million neurons.
Research is beginning to show the incredibly close relationship between the brain and gut, which is called the Gut Brain Axis.
1. Neuromuscular Disorder as a Presenting Feature of Celiac Disease. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry. 1997; 63: 770 - 775.

There is something else, and of great importance. Specific, abdominal breathing techniques, stimulates the Vagus nerve in such a way that it starts a process called neurogenesis which is the production of BDNF or Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor. BDNF is described as a super fertiliser for brain cells. (2)
(I feel that combined with a light and area-focused abdominal contact, and reflexology, enhances this process even more.)
BDNF is described as a super fertiliser for brain cells, not only capable of repair of brain tissue but regeneration throughout the body. In other words, the breathing and massage techniques release stem cells throughout the body.
(2) Theise, N.D., and R. Harris 2006 Postmodern biology: Handb Exp

I feel that passively releasing the soft tissues of the neck enhances this process even more, as it allows the vagus function to be less impeded.
Finishing off with reflexology application to the feet is the ‘icing on the cake’ as it consolidates the benefits of the other applications.
Although the manual applications to the abdomen and neck apply mainly to qualified massage therapists, they are also intended for self-help or between reflexology colleagues.
The applications to the neck have to be completely passive and without any form of manipulation whatsoever.

I am often asked, what can reflexologists do to help and to re-energise themselves? A reflexology treatment, particularly if self-administered, can be difficult and not very effective, however, specific self-massage of the abdomen is easy and highly therapeutic.
Various areas of the abdomen are highly reflex-rich and offer a chance for us to easily tap into an area which not only stores emotionally tensions but also physical.
I demonstrate these techniques at my seminars.
I look forward to meeting you.
